Welcome to YRS 2014!
|It has been somewhat daunting as the new Principal of Dainfern College to walk straight into all of the excitement and energy that is Round Square. I have had exposure to Round Square as a result of schools I had visited whilst moderating for the IEB, but until I first met with the Dainfern College team I didn’t fully grasp the nature and importance of this International Young Round Square Conference. What an exciting experience on offer for young people around the world and equally, a privilege and an opportunity for growth for us as a College to be able to host it in a short nine months’ time! I am most grateful to Yvette Russell, ably assisted by Lauren Myburgh and their team for all the hard work that goes into organising something of this magnitude.
Progress is well underway, with Baraza training currently one of the priorities. Should you wish to enjoy your stay in South Africa for a little longer around the conference, please investigate one of the pre-conferences on offer.
We have been furiously responding to requests for registration from around the world and look forward to welcoming you to our beautiful school and country.
Endangered - END.anger.e.d (END.anger.every.day)
Human beings inhabit this extraordinary world with over 1.5 billion other species. Across our globe we have named them, studied them, witnessed their incredible lives, protected them and celebrated their presence in so many different ways. Yet we have also neglected, abused and endangered their existence in what we consider OUR world. For example, nearly 400 rhinos in South Africa were killed during the first nine months of 2012 for the commercial value of their horns and with no regard to the value of their lives.
We live in a continent and world where there is a growing desire and need to understand what ENDANGERED means for us as responsible human beings, and what it means to all who share our planet. We need to talk, we need to listen, we need to plan, and we need to take action. In short, we need to END.anger.every.day!
Dainfern College, a dynamic young Round Square school, invites you to South Africa to participate in the first International Young Round Square conference from 4 – 10 May 2014. We are greatly honoured to be hosting you as we embark on a journey of discovery and rise to challenge ourselves to build new friendships, speak to one another, and share with one another - in compassion, friendship and generosity of spirit – as we endeavour to embrace and protect the wonderful world we share.
We look forward to your participation, to your thoughts and to your debate at this first International Young Round Square conference. We know that you will have a wonderful time in South Africa. You will learn a lot about yourself and others, as well as the rest of the species that share this planet with us, make lots of new friends and start thinking about the way forward – A Guide to Survival.
